The iPhone 17 Series, unveiled globally a few weeks ago, has sparked excitement — and debate — among tech enthusiasts and luxury phone lovers across the country.
Globally, the new iPhones are priced starting from around US$ 1,000 (about Shs 4 million), but import duties, shipping costs, and dealer markups have pushed prices much higher in Uganda.
According to Sage Buyers, a Kampala-based Apple product dealer, the cheapest model in the new lineup — the iPhone 17 Air (256GB) — goes for approximately Shs 5.99 million.
However, the hefty price tag has triggered widespread discussion on social media, particularly around affordability and spending habits among young Ugandans.
Radio station Galaxy FM recently shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), quoting a young woman posing with the latest model and asking,
“This iPhone 17 Pro Max costs UGX 10M; where do such girls get the money from?”
The post quickly went viral, attracting mixed reactions.
One user, Eddie Pages, defended women’s ability to afford luxury phones, saying,
“The truth is, most girls buy these iPhones themselves. They can easily spend 10 million without overthinking it. They don’t have many bills to handle. But for us guys, every expense comes with calculations and priorities. That’s the only reason why they get these iPhones before we do.”
Despite the buzz, it remains unclear when or if prices for the iPhone 17 Series will drop in Uganda, as demand continues to grow and availability remains limited in local stores.
