According to THE, the ranking assesses universities based on five key performance indicators: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook, and Industry Engagement. Makerere achieved an impressive overall score of 37.2, significantly higher than the regional peer average of 18.8.
The university performed particularly well in Research Quality, scoring 54.2%, and excelled in International Outlook with a remarkable 69.7%, reflecting its strong global collaborations and academic partnerships.
In his statement, Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe expressed pride in the institution’s continued leadership in higher education:
“It gives me great pleasure to share that Makerere University has been ranked Number One in the East African region. We continue to hold steadfast as the regional leader in higher education, and our commitment to deliver excellence in teaching, research, and socioeconomic impact has not wavered.”
Makerere also maintained its strong continental performance, ranking 8th in the 2024 Sub-Saharan African University Rankings.
