Uganda Christian University (UCU) is mourning the tragic loss of four students who died in separate road crashes within one week, leaving the university community in deep grief and shock.
The deceased students have been identified as Apio Consolate, Angella, Britney Treasure, and Laurine Mugume (Lauren) — all described by their peers and lecturers as promising young scholars whose lives were cut short too soon.
According to reports, Apio Consolate died in a fatal accident in Kiryandongo District while traveling to Mukono for her graduation ceremony. Angella reportedly lost her life in a motor accident in Mengo, while Britney Treasure and Laurine Mugume, both aged 22, perished in a crash at Bweyogerere on the night of October 23, 2025.
The Bweyogerere crash occurred at around 10:20 PM near Shire Petrol Station, involving a Toyota Hiace (UAV 453W) and a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle (UGB 771P). Police confirmed that the two UCU students were passengers on the motorcycle when it was hit by the speeding Hiace. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene and is still on the run.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango said investigations are underway to trace the driver and establish the exact cause of the crash.
“It was a case of reckless driving. The driver of the Toyota Hiace is still at large. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Mulago City Mortuary for post-mortem as investigations continue,” Onyango said in a statement issued on October 24.
The series of tragic incidents has sent waves of sorrow across the UCU fraternity. The University Chaplaincy held a special prayer service in memory of the students, urging the community to remain strong and uphold road safety awareness.
A statement from the university administration described the deaths as “a painful loss to the UCU family,” extending condolences to the families, friends, and classmates of the deceased.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our students — young, bright, and full of potential. We stand with their families in this difficult time and pray for God’s comfort,” the statement read.
The deaths of the four students within such a short span have reignited calls for stronger road safety measures, especially for students who frequently commute between university campuses and their homes.
The bodies of the deceased have since been handed over to their families for burial arrangements.
May their souls rest in eternal peace. 🕊️
