The Office of the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Jinja has suspended all operations at Itanda Falls following the tragic death of a student who fell at the popular tourist site.

According to a statement issued by Deputy RDC Kasibante Hassan, 25-year-old Maino Franko, a student at Kampala International University (KIU), died after an incident at the falls. Authorities described the news as deeply saddening and extended condolences to the family, particularly the victim’s father, Mzee Kipala Jafal.

“In response to this incident, the Office of the Deputy RDC Jinja District is suspending all operations at Itanda Falls with immediate effect,” the statement reads. The suspension will remain in place as investigations are carried out by the Uganda Police, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the District Security Committee (DSC), and other relevant agencies.

The district leadership emphasized that the temporary closure is intended to ensure public safety and allow investigators to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal fall.

“Itanda Falls remains closed to the public until further notice,” Kasibante said.

The site, known for its scenic rapids and adventure tourism activities, has previously drawn concerns over safety measures. This latest incident has renewed calls for stronger oversight and regulation of high-risk tourism environments.

Authorities have urged the public to remain patient as the investigation proceeds.
