{"id":1610,"date":"2026-07-22T09:55:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T09:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/youthtimes.news\/?p=1610"},"modified":"2026-07-22T09:55:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T09:55:17","slug":"ura-seizes-775kg-of-smuggled-rice-concealed-in-corn-cobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/youthtimes.news\/index.php\/2026\/07\/22\/ura-seizes-775kg-of-smuggled-rice-concealed-in-corn-cobs\/","title":{"rendered":"URA seizes 775Kg of smuggled rice concealed in corn cobs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Uganda Revenue Authority\u2019s Malaba Enforcement team has intercepted a consignment of smuggled rice concealed in sacks of corn cobs in Kaliat, Malaba, Tororo District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation was conducted following credible information from an informant regarding suspected concealed smuggled goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring the operation, the team recovered a consignment of rice that had been concealed in preparation for transportation. Smugglers are bundling bags of rice and corn cobs in one big sack, a method deliberately designed to disguise the true nature of the consignment and evade detection,\u201d said Assistant Commissioner Public and Corporate Affairs at the URA, Robert Kalumba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-medium wp-image-366865\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-network.chimpreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Image-2-800x450.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-366865\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Some of the rice recovered in the operation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kalumba explained that upon verification, they established that the consignment comprised 31 bags of Sana Rice, Long Grain, Parboiled, each weighing 25kg, giving a total weight of 775kgs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of these, 25 bags originated from Pakistan, and six bags from India and the estimated recovery value of the goods is UGX 5.7M.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile we continue to strengthen surveillance, smugglers are also constantly developing more creative and sophisticated concealment methods to evade customs controls,\u201d Kalumba noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He commended the enforcement teams for the seizure saying that the recovery highlights the critical role of human intelligence in combating smuggling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe success of this operation demonstrates that timely intelligence, combined with swift operational response, remains one of the most effective ways of disrupting smuggling networks and protecting government revenue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, a joint operation between the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) and the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) has led to the recovery of 100 jerrycans and 20 litres of ethanol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation followed complaints pof theft of neutral spirit and other goods in transit from Ntoroko border post to the DR Congo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response, Kalumba said &#8221;More effort has been directed to intensified information gathering in the areas of Kanara, Rwebisengo, Rwangara, Kayanja aimed at identifying the perpetrators, routes, patterns and infiltrating the smuggling rings involved.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On July 3, 2026, a consignment of 100 jerrycans and 20 litres of ethanol was intercepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recovery was made possible with the help of the UPDF and other sister agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8221;Enforcement is handling case management,&#8221; said Kalumba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smuggling by use of Lake Victoria and Lake Albert&#8217;s porous borders to move untaxed goods cost vast revenue losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSmuggling undermines legitimate trade and erodes economic stability, depriving our nation of vital revenue for development,\u201d URA Commissioner General John Musinguzi said in his recent remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, the URA has since deployed boats speed boats to strengthen marine enforcement operations, will patrol key water bodies, including Lake Victoria, Lake Albert, and the River Nile, to curb smuggling. ]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative reflects URA\u2019s commitment to adopting modern tools and adaptive strategies to combat smuggling along Uganda\u2019s major inland waterways, which have become conduits for illegal trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTogether, we can create a level playing field for legitimate businesses,\u201d Musinguzi added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Uganda Revenue Authority\u2019s Malaba Enforcement team has intercepted a consignment of smuggled rice concealed in sacks of corn cobs in Kaliat, Malaba, Tororo District.
