Dear fellow Ugandans,
I, Hon. Princess Persis Namuganza, Bukono County MP-elect, address the heart of why this Speakership race matters so deeply: the urgent need to restore public trust in Parliament and reclaim Uganda’s proud international image.
Let me be crystal clear: the corruption scandals and controversies that have stained recent parliamentary proceedings do not, in any way, reflect the Government of Uganda or the National Resistance Movement as a whole. These were the actions of a few individuals. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa has stepped firmly onto the ground, setting clear boundaries and ensuring such betrayals of public trust never recur. The vast majority of Honourable Members, the NRM leadership, and the millions of patriotic Ugandans who support the Government remain committed to integrity and service.
This is not the Uganda our liberators fought for.
Since independence in 1962, our Parliament has known periods of great dignity. Yet recent years saw our image suffer internationally sanctions, headlines, and embarrassment that hurt every citizen. This does not define our nation. The men and women who went to the bush under President Museveni sacrificed for a respected, sovereign Uganda, not for the misdeeds of a small circle.
Across Africa and the world, visionary Speakers have shown us how to rebuild trust. In Ghana, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin restored parliamentary credibility through uncompromising integrity, lifestyle audits, and anti-corruption leadership, earning global respect even amid political turbulence. In South Africa, the late Dr. Frene Ginwala transformed a broken institution into a beacon of democratic accountability after apartheid, rebuilding both national and international confidence through transparency and principled leadership. In the United Kingdom, Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle has maintained the House of Commons as a global gold standard of trust by upholding impartiality, discipline, and openness, ensuring Parliament remains a respected pillar of democracy.
As Speaker, I will lead with the same determination. We will implement full public disclosure of parliamentary resources, strengthen independent oversight, modernise ethics frameworks, and ensure every action rebuilds the dignity of our House. Uganda’s Parliament must once again stand tall, respected at home and admired abroad.
This is not a fight for personal position. It is a fight for the good of our motherland Uganda. The men and women who went to the bush under President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa sacrificed for freedom, justice, and accountable leadership not so a small circle could tarnish the dignity of the institution they built. We cannot sit and watch the tireless work of NRM leadership and all patriots who have developed our nation be wasted. We must speak up. We must set an example for the young generation. We must restore the dignity of our nation.
A trusted Parliament heals Uganda’s image and honours our liberation legacy
